The unusual history of the ARCTIC project
|
in 2018 the Natural Environment Research Council (N.E.R.C.) invited Mimika to devise, build and present a production in our touring theatre tent inspired by the massive "Changing Arctic Ocean" (C.A.O.) research project.
In 2019 the Arts Council of England agreed to support the work and fund preview events in Primary schools West Yorkshire. In March 2020, just two weeks before the previews were due to be presented, Covid 19 arrived and both Leeds and Bradford councils banned outside groups visiting their schools. |
Mimika's Lockdown
Unable to present any performances in our tent for the foreseeable future we engaged in "internal housekeeping tasks."
After a great deal of thought and following discussions with funders, others and our board of trustees in August 2021 we committed to reimagining the ARCTIC as an online project for Primary Schools.
No light decision and no simple undertaking. Creating the original ARCTIC was quite a journey and converting that into a different medium has been another. There will be time and space to chart the progress of both these ventures later elsewhere.

So - How does it work?
For the moment we are restricting access to the show material to people who are willing and able to assess it and give us useful and practical feedback, i.e. teachers.
They try the stuff out and report back what works, what doesn't and offer any ideas, advice or tips they may have.
Simple, and so far, very effective.
Places for accessing the material are limited so we have a basic vetting procedure.
